A3P Mini-Game
This digital mini-game is inspired by the A3P serious game.
What You'll Practice
- Situational awareness, team alignment, and decision-making under uncertainty.

Assess the threat. Align with your team. Activate a response.

Multiple groups can play concurrently.
Under uncertainty, clarity is the first casualty. The Assess, Align and Activate for Preparedness (A3P) game illuminates how individual perspective shapes threat assessment. Players explore their own decision-making patterns under uncertainty, sharpening skills in situational awareness and team alignment. By refining this awareness and alignment, A3P builds shared understanding of how individuals and teams evaluate information, select activation levels, and determine key elements of activation plans. This is an all-hazard game framework that can support a variety of threat scenarios.

What You'll Practice
In this game, each player uses an individual game board to visually capture their assessment of the threat based on data provided in the game. Players learn about the threat scenario, and each player receives a deck of cards with additional information in situation reports. After reading each card, players mark their assessment of that data on their board.
At the end of the round, each player selects a hypothesis, assessing the threat based on the data they have and indicating their confidence level in their assessment. Players can then compare assessments with the other players in their group and review the data that led to each hypothesis.
In the next round, players determine what level of activation they believe is appropriate given their threat assessment, come to a consensus on activation as a group, and explore elements of activation through robust discussions.
Available versions of this game include a focus on: multiple pathogen outbreak scenarios (novel influenza, avian H5N, dengue, hantavirus); a public safety incident; campus air quality; and a hospital neurological issue.
The A3P Insight App generates summary reports, light analytics, discussion points, and text-entry opportunities for the facilitator to capture and reinforce game learnings. The Insight app will give the facilitator rich discussion points and visualization tools to use in a debrief. This information will support hotwash discussions or an after action report. The app lives on the CAPTRS digital platform, and users receive login credentials to be able to log as many game sessions as they would like.

“The game helped me think about my blind spots and hone my skills. It prompted thoughts on drivers of decision-making for public health. Decision-making based on a risk assessment is what you do in public health your whole career, and the game helped me analyze how I think about sources and reliability of each source when I make my risk assessment.”
