Knowledge Space Game Framework

Complex problems require more than just a brainstorming session, they require shared system understanding. Knowledge Space is a collaborative game that breaks down silos, integrating insights into a unified representation of a complex problem. Our first Knowledge Space edition supports experts addressing the complex problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR is a multifaceted challenge connecting many areas of expertise, and Knowledge Space provides the tool to define and explore it. By mapping causal relationships between system factors and testing how the system might respond to varying future conditions, teams identify critical knowledge gaps and build the strategic alignment necessary to navigate complex challenges.

The Knowledge Space game framework can be used to explore other complex problems. If you are interested in working with CAPTRS on a new version of the Knowledge Space game, please contact us.

Description

Turn complex AMR systems into actionable policy insights. Tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) requires sharing knowledge and understanding the components of this challenge. Knowledge Space AMR is a collaborative systems-mapping game designed to bridge the gap between individual expertise and collective action by integrating insights into a unified representation of the AMR problem. Players begin by dissecting specific AMR challenges, identifying the causal factors that drive them. Through a structured process of visualization and debate, the group captures a model of the critical points of influence where policy can have the most significant impact.

The game then leads players through a strategic foresight module. Players project their models into future scenarios, identifying how emerging trends might shift the AMR landscape. The result is a more resilient understanding of the challenge, equipping players to build policy that acknowledges the present while planning for the future.

Learning Objectives

  • Integrate knowledge across silos for specific AMR challenges
  • Practice adaptive foresight
  • Practice consensus-building
  • Create a shared model of AMR challenges

Game Details

Knowledge Space AMR has a flexible content format, allowing facilitators to curate the experience to meet specific objectives. Hosts can, for each play session, select AMR Challenge Cards that reflect the most pressing or relevant aspects of antimicrobial resistance for their specific group of players. This flexibility ensures every session is timely and targeted, providing a versatile platform for future sessions.

During the first phase of the game, players collaborate to create their Knowledge Space. Each individual player defines specific factors that contribute to the problem, adding their unique knowledge and perspective, and then the players work together to determine how the factors relate to the central AMR Challenge as well as to each other. Players control whether to dive deeply into a specific aspect of the challenge or take a birds-eye view, exploring the breath rather than the depth of the challenge elements.

In the second phase of the game, players imagine future events and trends that will affect their AMR challenge, and then bring the discussion back to their model to add or modify the factors that influence the problem.

  • Completion Time: 2–3 hours recommended (can be longer, depending on how many challenge cards the team would like to draw)
  • Number of Players: maximum of 8 per group; multiple groups may play the game simultaneously.
  • Languages: English, Spanish, and Portuguese
